Join us to explore the history and attractions of our neighboring Galveston island, founded in 1836 and at one-time Texasí largest city and prime commercial center. Our tour will start at the Pier 21/Strand area, where we each will choose from visits to the Texas Seaport Museum and Tall Ship Elissa, the Ocean Star drilling rig, story of the Great Storm of 1900, or a walking/shopping tour of the historical Strand district (entrance fees for these attractions not included in the bus trip registration). We will meet for lunch at the Fishermanís Wharf, one of the best places around for some fresh local fare while enjoying splendid views of the bay. After lunch, we will board the Historical Foundationís Seagull II for a tour of the harbor and learning about the history and lore of the local waters. Then it is a short trip to Seawolf Park and the American Undersea Warfare Center, where we will have guided tours of the USS Cavalla, a World War II submarine that sank a Japanese aircraft carrier involved in the Pearl Harbor attacks, and the USS Stewart, the only Edsall-class destroyer escort preserved in the United States. The bus trip, lunch, harbor tour, and Seawolf Park visit are all included in the price.
